Montana Magic: Our Unforgettable Stay at Circle Bar Guest Ranch

Montana Magic, our unforgettable stay at Circle Bar Guest Ranch. Our Cowgirls with Cameras Spring Immersive Photography Learning Experience took place at one of Montana’s hidden gems, the Circle Bar Guest Ranch in Hobson, owned by the True Collection.
Nestled along the historic Judith River in central Montana, Circle Bar Guest Ranch offers an authentic Western experience steeped in history. Dating back to the late 1800s, the ranch sits at an elevation of 5,000 feet and is surrounded by the stunning landscapes of the Judith River Headwaters and the Little Belt Mountains. The legendary Western artist Charles Russell once rode these same hills and trails.

The Judith River flows directly through the heart of ranch operations, creating a picturesque backdrop for photography, horseback riding, and simply soaking in the beauty of Big Sky Country. From the iconic red barn to the rolling pastures and mountain vistas, every corner of the ranch offers opportunities for unforgettable images and authentic Western storytelling.

I can’t say enough about the incredible staff and accommodations at Circle Bar Guest Ranch. The cabins were rustic, charming, and full of character, yet equipped with all the modern comforts you could ask for.

Elyssa, who oversees horse operations, as well as her fellow wranglers Daniee, Stacey, and Nic, did an outstanding job helping with our photography setups while expertly managing a large herd of horses. Their hard work, patience, and willingness to help created unique photographic opportunities throughout the week.

I’d like to say a special thank you to Angie and Ted for stepping outside their comfort zones and modeling for us. They were wonderful sports and helped create some truly memorable images.

One of my favorite photography locations was the historic red barn. The spacious hayloft became the perfect creative playground as we experimented with off-camera lighting and a smoke machine to create dramatic Western-inspired images.
What makes this learning experience unique is that the educational content is customized for the attending participants. Prior to the event, attendees help shape the curriculum based on their interests and skill levels. Whether you’re looking to better understand horse behavior, strengthen your technical camera knowledge, improve your storytelling skills, or explore advanced editing techniques, the instruction is tailored specifically to the group.

I can’t say enough about the food, every meal was delicious. The kitchen staff went above and beyond to ensure everyone was well fed and cared for throughout our stay.
And perhaps one of the best parts? Daily horseback rides are included. Participants had the opportunity to explore the ranch and experience Montana the way it was meant to be…in the saddle!
From the horses and hospitality to the scenery and photographic opportunities, Circle Bar Guest Ranch exceeded every expectation!
